WINDMILL RIDE INFORMATION

Ride descriptions of the century and half century can be found below as well as elevation charts.

The Metric Century and 50 miles will take a rider into Los Alamos and the first
rest stop. This is fairly flat with a few 1-2% climbs. When leaving Los Alamos
the route will take riders out of the valley and past the Lucas/Lewellyn winery.
The route then turns east and begins a long climb that steepens as one gets
closer to the top. This climbs wanders through a canyon that has some small
farms, oak groves and smallish wild grass fields. After cresting the climb, the
route is downhill past the twin windmills, the rides namesake.

Just past the windmills riders make a left turn on Foxen
canyon Road and continue downhill until the right turn on Tepesquet Road. Here
the road crosses a newly constructed bridge and there is a brief, but steep
climb to Santa Maria Mesa Road. The road takes riders past Cambria winery and
vineyards and ends at the second rest stop in Sisquoc at the elementary school.

From the rest stop the road slowly climbs towards Old Dominion
road and the Clark Road. Both of these are climbs and since they are close to
the end of the metric century, some people will be tired and feel that the
climbs are big ones. The average grade on Old Dominion is 3-4%. The average
grade on Clark is 2.5-3%. Once over the top of Clark the rest is a long downhill
back towards the park.

If a rider has not done a lot of climbing there will be a bit
of an accomplishment felt when finished, but not overwhelmingly steep ordeals.

For the Century riders, the ride continues, after lunch at Pioneer Park, with a relatively flat ride to the town of Guadalupe and back. Guadalupe is located in Santa Barbara County, on the Central California coast near the famous Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes. California Highway 1 runs right through the downtown of Guadalupe.
