The 2010 WINDMILL CENTURY was held on July 17, 2010, at Pioneer Park in Santa Maria, California.
The Santa Maria Valley is nestled in the foothills of Santa Barbara County wine country. Located in the heart of California's Central Coast. It features beautiful scenery, championship golf courses, national theater, bird watching, pristine beaches, performing arts, world famous barbecue, succulent strawberries, nearby missions, hiking, festivals, family events, and award winning wineries located along the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail. All in all, a perfect setting for a beautiful bike ride. The day was perfect: clear blue skies, temperatures between 72 and 78 degrees, friendly rest and water stops, a delicious lunch stop for the 100 milers and a wonderful Santa Maria style BBQ for all the participants at the end of their ride. Of course, there was the matter of a little headwind in some spots, but that just made the ride a little more challenging. All proceeds from the event, with some withheld for expenses, are given back to the community through the club’s Bike Safety Essay/giveaway contests held in local elementary schools each year, as well as other safety related bicycle issues with children. The Tailwinds Bicycle Club also contribute to other local philanthropic agencies who ask for help. The Tailwinds Bicycle Club of Santa Maria thanks all the companies, volunteers and individuals who contributed to the success of this event and especially the riders who came from all over California and Nevada. Good news….we will be doing it again next year!
